Boat & Ferry Travel

Many ferries run between the Asian and European continents. Deniz otobüsü (sea buses) run between the continents and, in summer, to destinations such as the Princes' Islands; they are fast and efficient. For an inexpensive ride take the boat in the direction of Anadolu Kavagi, along the Bosporus to its mouth at the Black Sea. The boat leaves year-round from Dock No. 5 at the Eminönü Docks, next to the Galata Bridge on the Old Istanbul side, at 10:35 AM and 1:35 PM, with two extra trips on weekdays and four extra trips on Sunday, April through September. The fare is $6 (round-trip). The trip takes 1¾ hours one-way. You can disembark at any of the stops and return by land if you wish. Regular ferries depart from Kabatas Dock, near Dolmabahçe Palace on the European side, to Üsküdar on the Asian side; and also from Eminönü Docks 1 and 2, near Sirkeci Station.
